Karl-Heinz Schaumburg obtained his degree in electrical engineering and electronics from the Technical University of Aachen, Germany.

After he had worked with the patent department of Siemens for seven years, he founded his own patent law firm in 1970. For 30 years he served his clients in all areas of intellectual property law and established our firm as one of the renowned offices in Munich. Karl-Heinz Schaumburg mainly worked on patents related to electrical engineering and electronics in general as well as telecommunication, camera technology and data processing.

Karl-Heinz Schaumburg is now performing an advisory function within the firm.
 
 
Dr. Dieter Thoenes

Dr. Thoenes obtained his degree and his PhD in physics from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

Dr. Thoenes joined the firm in 1976. In more than 30 years of professional experience, he has served his clients in numerous areas of practice, including obtaining and defending patents and trademarks, handling opposition proceedings before the German and European Patent Authorities and advising clients on the enforcement and licensing of patents and trademarks. He has particular experience in dealing with nullity proceedings before the German Federal Patent Court and the German Federal Supreme Court. Dr. Thoenes has acted as expert, appointed by the Court, in patent infringement proceedings.

Dr. Thoenes works on patents related to mechanical engineering in general, including machine tools, automobile technology, injection and pressure molding;; medical and surgical equipment; and data processing systems.

For some years, Dr. Thoenes was involved in the training of German patent attorney candidates on behalf of the German Patent Lawyers Association.
 
 
Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Thurn

Dr. Thurn obtained his degree and PhD in electrical engineering and electronics at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. Dr. Thurn worked at the company Schering AG for three years, where he contributed, as assistant to the management, to a market survey on new technologies conducted by the management consultancy firm McKinsey.

Dr. Thurn joined the firm in 1987. He focuses on intellectual property and handles domestic and foreign cases in patent, trademark and license matters. He is particularly experienced in patent prosecution, opposition cases and validity opinions and cases of patent and trademark infringement.

His technical work focuses on the fields of mechanics, electrical engineering and electronics, telecommunication, software, electro-medical technique, optoelectronics, printing technology and automobile engineering.
 
 
Dr. Jürgen Landskron

Dr. Landskron obtained his degree and PhD in physics from the University of Munich, Germany.

Dr. Landskron joined the firm in 1996. Since then he has served his clients in managing intellectual property issues focusing primarily on patent prosecution. He has particular experience in handling interviews with examiners and managing opposition cases involving oral proceedings before the German Federal Patent Court and the Technical Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office.

For his domestic and foreign clients, Dr. Landskron deals with a large number of patent applications, especially in the technical fields of optics, medical engineering, automobile engineering and nanotechnology.

Dr. Landskron is also experienced in matters pertaining to the infringement and validity of design patents.
 
 
Lars Eckert

Lars Eckert obtained his degree in electrical engineering and electronics from the Technical University of Leipzig, Germany. After his graduation, he worked as an electrical engineer for about three years, in the course of which he designed various electrical installations and systems, programmed programmable logical controllers and supervised the start-up phases in a number of plants, primarily chemical plants in Asia, especially in South Korea, China and Singapore.

Lars Eckert joined the firm in 1999.He assists his clients in managing intellectual property issues primarily in the fields of patent prosecution, patent oppositions, trademark prosecution and trademark oppositions. He has handled opposition cases before the German Federal Patent Court and the Technical Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office. He has special experience in the fields of control engineering; software; circuit technology; power engineering; image processing; printing technology; automotive parts. Further, he deals with problems concerning the application of General Public License (GPL) of Software.
 
 
Melanie Zani

Melanie Zani is involved in the patent prosecution process, including drafting patent and utility model applications both in German and English languages. She is experienced in conducting drafting responses to examination reports issued by the German and European Patent Offices. Melani Zani is also experienced in conducting patent, trademark and design searches in advance of the application process and disputes.

Melani Zani is dealing with patent and utility model applications in the fields of mechanics and electrical engineering, optics, medical equipment, image processing and printing technology.

Melanie Zani obtained her engineering degree from the scientific-technological university Politecnico di Milano of Milan, Italy. The focus of her studies were on statistic and probabilistic models of environmental systems, informatics, remote sensing and image processing, as well as on structural mechanics. After graduation, she passed the Italian State Examination entitling her to pursue the profession of engineer independently. Melanie Zani joined Schaumburg & Partner in 2016.

In addition to German and English, Melanie Zani is a native Italian speaker.



Steffen Schwertfeger

Steffen Schwertfeger is currently dealing with patent prosecution, including drafting patent and utility model applications both in German and English language. He deals with examination reports from the German and European Patent Offices. Further, Steffen Schwertfeger is experienced in conducting patent, trademark and design searches in advance of the application process and disputes.

Technically, Steffen Schwertfeger focuses on the fields of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, optics, in particular microscopes, eye-glasses and lenses, medical equipment, in particular endoscopes, surgical instruments and accessories.

Steffen Schwertfeger obtained his Master of Science in physics from the University of Siegen in 2014. He worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Munich in 2015/2016. His scientific work focused on quark flavor physics in view of the planned Belle-2 experiment at the nuclear- and particle research center KEK in Japan. Steffen Schwertfeger joined Schaumburg & Partner in 2016.



Alexander Schlee

Mr. Schlee graduated from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, as a mechanical engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) with emphasis in the field of automotive engineering, machine tools and the mechanics of flight. His German engineering degree is the equivalent of a U.S. masters degree in mechanical engineering. While pursuing his college education he worked as a technical designer in the fields of laboratory fittings, machine tools and in the automotive industry.

Mr. Schlee's many years of experience in intellectual property rights includes domestic and foreign patents, utility models, trademarks and industrial designs. However, he deals mainly with International patent applications (PCT), U.S. patents, European patents, German patents and utility models. Mr. Schlee has represented numerous clients before various National and International Authorities for more than 25 years, specifically clients from the United States and Germany, but also from many other countries. This specific expertise makes him an expert in understanding the discrepancies and alignments between various Intellectual Property systems.

After working for 13 years, mainly out of the head office of a German based Intellectual Property law firm in Munich, Germany, Mr. Schlee became the firm's founding partner of the Los Angles Office in 2000. The Los Angeles office was reconfigured in January of 2007 and became Schlee IP International, P.C.
